I love how Stephenie Meyer uses all the metaphores and similes in this quote. It really creates a visual image in your head. I like how she's comparing fealings to natural things like the night sky. It makes a lot of sense to me to do it this way.

Blog Free Write #3♥
It was a dark and stormy night in the little town of Craysville, the place that I now call home. I could remember the one night that was exactly like this except moods are now different and emotions are no longer mixed. October 31st at 11:05 p.m.; that was the time and that was the day. Except now, It’s 5 years later and although what I’ve gained hasn’t completely made up for what I’ve lost, It’s coming pretty close. 5 years ago, I’ll admit that I was unsure of my decision to run. I wanted to hide from the world and shun them for the bad things that have happened to me and what was coming to me. For 5 years ago today at this moment is when I got the one call that would change my life forever.
Tip-tat tip-tat. That was the soft sound of the rainfall on the tin roof of the veranda. Our milky white house was perched on top of the hill laden with leaves. I sat and held Charlie next to me on the swing as he slept soundly. I loved the rain, I always had and I always will. So even in the bleakness of night, I was outside. That was my rule and I obeyed it and stuck to it like the laws of the United States. From the time it started raining until the time it ended, that was my “me” time. I could become one with the person I was inside and the one I pretended to be. I could ask my self questions that reflected on my past and foreshadowed my future. Supposedly answering yourself is a sure sign of insanity but for me, it’s just a way to get an answer. This way I was not forced to share my private thoughts with anyone but me. As I contemplated, I heard the sudden ringing of the phone. I went to go pick up the phone but I could not understand who was calling. The caller id said that it was the Johnsonville hospital. Why would they be calling our house at such a late hour? Anyway, I answered and trying my best to have the utmost curtsy said “Hello, Martin residence.”
“Yes, is this Emmy Martin?” the woman on the other line said with a pleasant yet urged tone.
“Yeah, I’m Emmy. Who is this?”
“I’m Carol from the Johnsonville hospital. I’m sorry to inform you that Mr. and Mrs. John Martin are currently in ICU.”
“How? They were just visiting some friends at a work party.” I had a delayed response due to the fact that I was still in shock from the breathtaking news.
“I’m not allowed to release any information on them at the moment. If you wish to see them, just come down to the Johnsonville hospital on the corner of North Maple and Castle Court.”
“Alright I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
That night was absolutely and positively the worst night of my life and I will never forget it.

Free Write #2
Fall is without a doubt my favorite season. During this time of year, I do many activities such as picking apples, raking leaves, dressing up for Halloween and trick-or-treating, cooking for thanksgiving dinner at our house and celebrating my birthday. Although, my favorite fall activity has to be creating my Halloween costume with my mom. This is a very special time where we can create, think, talk and laugh together. Every year since kindergarten, my mom and I have had the weekend before Halloween to think up a Halloween costume. In previous years, I have been a scare crow, Lunette from PBS kids, a pink lady, amouse, vampiress, psychedelic lady bug, alien princess, snow fairy, a cheerleader, and the statue of liberty. Previous to our weekend extravaganza, brainstorm while we sip apple cider and eat cinnamon sugar and blueberry cake donuts or oatmeal raisin cookies. Once we make our decision, we go out to the thrift store (my dad calls it the hee-bee jee-bee store), wal-mart, and JOann fabrics to get all the materials we need. Then we go back home and start working and only stop for a lunch break. By the end of the weekend, the costume is practically perfect and only needs minor adjustments. This year will be by far the best costume session yet because this year we have thought up the best costume ever. This year I plan on being the Lollipop Princess from Candy Land. I will wear a yellow dress with a curly purple wig and orange high heels. We will attach big lollipops to the bottom of my dress and I will carry one big one to lick throughout the day. To make this Halloween extra special, my mom’s friend, Sheila, will be visiting from England. She can share a different way of celebrating “All Hallow’s Eve.” I am excited to learn the English version of this holiday. Costume decorating is my favorite activity in Halloween witch is my favorite holiday in my favorite time of year… FALL!

Study Tips
Hey Guys!
Here are a few study tips for the BIG giver test Monday!
1) Look over the book. Read the first and last few sentences of every chapter. That will usually refresh your memory a little. (you may want to do that on the really important chapters before the test)
2) Check out the link titled The Giver Summaries on my blog. There, you can find tons of great info about the book in short form!
3) Review all your vocab from the book. It might be helpful for the test.
4) Don't sweat it! If you study and don't cram you'll do fine!

Sameness and Difference
Topic: Sameness and Difference. What is good about it? What is bad about it? What could be changed? Use what you know about our society and Jonas's society to write your entry.
There is a lot to be said about sameness and difference and how it affects your life style. Jonas’s society is a utopia and the way they thought they could make it perfect is by applying sameness to all the aspects of the community. Depending on how you look at it, sameness can be a very good thing. In Jonas’s society, nobody is better than anyone else and no one is homeless or hungry. The community is peaceful and no one thinks anything about death, war, poverty, or anything bad in life, because they don’t know about it. Now we are ridding the world of all the bad things and focusing solely on what Jonas’s community thinks of as good. Poverty, homelessness, hunger and war can never occur if no one really knows about them. Now you can never fear death because you know its coming and you have a good idea of when. You can also pick when you die. Death in this society is called release. Because there is no real type of currency there is no social class system. The American society thrives on the amount of money you have. The more money you have, the higher you are in the social class system. In Jonas’s society, you must be issued everything because of this. Now they must give everyone the same things at the same ages to still have sameness. If there is no type of currency, there is no way to be better than everyone else. Because there are none of these things, it is extremely safe. It is a very practical lifestyle. There are no blizzards, hail, hurricanes or thunderstorms because of climate control. You could never be freezing cold or burning hot. The same crops can always be harvested and eaten all year round so there is no specific season for crops such as strawberries, pumpkins, corn, and watermelons. Sameness does offer lots of good things.
On the other hand, sameness can be a bad thing as well. There are no colors, animals or seasons in Jonas’s society. There is no music, snow, sunshine, holidays or love. Removing all these things would make a huge difference in society. Without these things, feelings would not be created. Imagine how hard it would be to describe people, animals and objects without using their color, even if it means saying that they’re colorless. If there were not animals, veterinarians, animal biologists, livestock farmers and many more people would be left without jobs. For some people, certain seasons might be good, but for others, rainy and snowy seasons might not be as pleasant as the sunnier ones. Still, it’s a good change to have a day of rain, snow, or even frost after a long sunny week. Even though crops and flowers may go dormant and livestock could get cold, it’s good to have a change in weather. Even though there are a lot of good things that sameness brings, it can be a bad too.
While some prefer sameness, others would choose difference over sameness for these reasons. Every individual in the world is different. If we lost that, we would be losing every quality that makes us and our world around us special. Color is a big part of our life. If the grass wasn't green and the sky wasn’t blue, what would it be? If everything just blended in with everything else, we wouldn’t plainly see where our feet were on the road, where the person was in front of us, or where the door to our dwelling was. With color, all of this is made possible. If you’re shoes are red and you’re walking on tan pavement, then you can clearly see where you’re walking and the possibility of tripping is very low. The same thing applies to everything else. Animals are also a big part of our life. With difference comes the option of animals. For some people, animals are dirty, creepy, repulsive creatures and that’s okay. For others though, they are cute, cuddly and fun to play with. If people feel this way they can have pets like dogs, cats, fish, hamsters, guinea pigs, horses, cows, and even ants! Pets can give humans a companion and in some cases, assist humans with disabilities. Without this option, people living alone can be lonely and without a friend and pets give them that. Without a change in weather, there is no chance for various recreational activities. Snow can be cold, but it brings fun things to do like sledding, building snowmen and snow forts, snow angels, snowball fights, snowboarding, ice skating and skiing. When the seasons change and warmer weather comes, it can bring activities like surfing, swimming, volleyball, baseball and softball, playing on the beach, boating and camping. Finally, there is choice. With difference comes the power and responsibility to choose. You can choose what you wear in the morning, like jeans or a skirt. You have an opportunity to choose to have a pet or not and what kind of pet you want. You can choose to write in cursive or print. Difference offers the world more opportunity and choice than sameness does.
Like sameness, difference also has a lot of cons. When you have difference, there’s a large possibility for homelessness and poverty. These can happen because of the money issue. With money comes the chance to have different amounts of it. The more successful people in life generally have more money. Now there is a chance for the less fortunate to lose their houses, jobs and everything they own and become poor. If the weather changes, you can be burning hot one day, and freezing cold the next since humans are warm blooded, we must maintain a certain temperature to stay comfortable. Now death, war, poverty and homelessness are know and sadness is likely to occur. If our society went to sameness now, there would be drastic changes to our lifestyles.

Free Write #1
I would do a lot with a million dollars. First I would put as much money as i needed in my college account (about $200,000) so that i could go to absolutely any college that i could afford and that would accept me. Then I would give about $100,000 to my parents for monthly expenses like food insurance, utility bills, and cell phone bills. Then I would pledge monthly donations to various charities for about $10,000 for a year or so. Then i would save about $100,000 and put that money in the bank for future needs like cars and apartment payments once i get out of college. Then i would invest in a new piano and baritone because my are well used and in need of replacing. Then I would buy that extremely expensive pastel colored outfit that I've been wanting from the mall and match it with a white Coach purse. I would also replace my ominous desk and television and upgrade to a smaller more organized white desk and a new flat screen T.V. Finally, I would use the rest of my money for my dream vacation to Australia and New Zealand. I would go and rent a house on the coast of the Great Barrier Reef. I would also rent my own private yacht to take me across the ocean. While there on my 2 week vacation I would visit the Sydney opera house, snorkel in the Great Barrier Reef, hike through the outback, and buy lots of souvenirs for friends and family. Having a million dollars to do all these things would be truly wonderful.

Welcome Response
I absolutely love blogging. I watched Alli and Alese set up their accounts since i didn't have a computer so it was easy to start my own account and write my very first blog! I'm only curious about one thing. I read the directions on the back to make my blog more secure but I still can't find the link on the website to get there. I think that we can incorporate our blog into class by making part of our blog about our SSR book, Class Novel, or Read Aloud book. This way we won't have to spend as much time on discussing the book in class and you can have what we say about today's reading in our blog as a reference. For our next free write, we should describe our favorite memory using as many adjectives as possible and use at least 5 adjectives that are less common describing words like taste, feel, hear, and emotions.
